Creating a VLOG style video for a Hide and Seek game

📽️ Project Overview

This video project was created for Yes Toronto, covering one of the most unique events we’ve ever pulled off. The goal was to document a full-blown game of hide and seek, hosted across an IKEA store, and turn it into a shareable, engaging vlog-style video for both YouTube and Instagram.

I was responsible for building the story, compiling usable footage, and ensuring that the playful chaos translated into an energetic, watchable format across both platforms.

🎯 Goals & Challenges

The main goal was simple: make the viewer feel like they were part of the action. But having everyone film themselves to keep it authentic and using only minimal equipment (just phones) wasn’t without its hurdles. Not everyone was comfortable on camera, and after reviewing the footage, it became clear that there were major gaps in the story.

Another challenge was editing the raw clips into two formats: a full-length vlog for YouTube and a bite-sized vertical promo for Instagram. Both needed to capture the same spirit but cater to very different audiences.

🎬 Behind the Scenes

The creative process was all about immersion. To fill the gaps in the footage, I decided to creatively integrate WhatsApp group chat messages, where most of the planning, reactions, and funny moments happened. This approach helped highlight the excitement, strategy, and hilarious missteps.

I used quick cuts, upbeat music, sound effects, and simple on-screen text to maintain a casual, vlog-style rhythm. This editing style enhanced the overall energy and made the story easy to follow.

📈 Outcome

The final YouTube video captured the full experience, while the shorter Instagram reel acted as a teaser to build anticipation. Both versions were well received, generating buzz within the community and encouraging more people to join future events.

Viewers shared that it reminded them of childhood fun and that next time, they wanted in on the action, on an even bigger scale.

💡 Takeaways

This project reminded me that storytelling is all about presence and authenticity. Even with limited gear, a powerful narrative can emerge with the right approach.

I also honed my ability to edit for different formats, maintaining consistent energy across platforms while staying true to the spirit of the event.
